Juba, November 11, 2016 (SSNA) — South Sudanese security agents have told representatives of the Eye Radio (ER) that they must stop broadcasting effective immediately, a senior journalist told Reuters.
Nichola Mandil, a senior journalist at Eye Radio in Juba, which many listeners rely on for news, told Reuters that security officials stopped ER broadcasters without giving any reason. Mandil adds that government agents locked their studios, took keys, and asked journalists to leave.
“Eye Radio has been officially shut down by the National Security indefinitely. Security officers shut down the radio station, locked the three studios and took the keys with them,” Nichola Mandil, a senior journalist at the Eye Radio said.
“They ordered all the journalists to leave the station immediately and we are now in the process of going home,” he added.
It is not clear what prompted national security to close down the US-funded media outlet.
However, South Sudanese government has constantly been harassing, detaining, and threatening journalists who report anti-government views.
In October, the Committee to Project Journalists (CPJ) ranked South Sudan as a deadly place for Journalists.
