Addis Ababa, March 26, 2018 (SSNA) — In its 61st Extra-Ordinary Session in Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, the Council of Ministers of the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) issued a communique, saying the East African regional bloc has decided to lift the house arrest of South Sudanese rebel leader Dr. Riek Machar and relocate him to any country outside the East African region.
The document, seen by the South Sudan News Agency (SSNA) appears to be an offer to the armed opposition leader to be transferred from South Africa to another country.
“[IGAD] decides the house arrest of SPLM/IO leader Dr Riek Machar be lifted as soon as possible, on conditions that ensure he will renounce violence and not obstruct the peace process and he be allowed to relocate to any country outside the region and are not neighboring South Sudan; designated IGAD Ministers will propose and decide a possible location,” the statement reads.
IGAD says it is extremely concerned about CoHA violations committed by government troops last month, adding that it endorses a progress report of its special envoy to South Sudan.
A senior SPLM-IO leader told the SSNA in Addis Ababa that the leadership of the armed opposition is closely examining the proposal.
