Juba, January 7, 2019 (SSNA) — The United Kingdom Secretary of Defense Gavin Williamson said his country is working to bring stability to South Sudan and that the people of the UK stand with the people of the war-ravaged young nation.
Williamson comment comes as he tours the country.
“The UK is a nation that leads from the front – promoting security, championing prosperity, and protecting human rights. We stand with the people of South Sudan, particularly those who suffer horrific crimes such as sexual and gender-based violence,” Williamson says, adding, “We all want Africa’s newest country to seek a peaceful and prosperous future.”
During his visit, Secretary Williamson met with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) officials, South Sudan’s President, and visited a UN Protection of Civilian (PoC) camp in Malakal. Williamson also visited a Bentiu-based UK aid female only agency which assists victims of sexual violence.
The United Kingdom has 300 peacekeepers in South Sudan stationed in Malakal and Bentiu. The UK build a Level 2 Field Hospital in Bentiu and recently completed upgrades to 15km of roads vital for food and aid delivery.
The UK is the third-largest humanitarian donor to South Sudan.
