New York, January 20, 2023 (SSNA) — The Republic of South Sudan has lost UN voting rights over unpaid dues as the young nation struggles to recover from years of civil war, the South Sudan News Agency has learned.
In a letter signed by the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and seen by the South Sudan News Agency, South Sudan failed to pay its dues to the UN operating budget.
It is not clear how much South Sudan owes to the UN. However, In the letter, the Secretary-General says South Sudan could restore its voting rights by paying a minimum of USD 196,130.
South Sudan is also facing persistent criticism from the East African Community (EAC) over unpaid dues. Last month, the regional bloc branded the young nation as “the biggest defaulter” with arrears of at least 22 million dollars.
