Juba, October 2, 2024 (SSNA) — The Director General of the Internal Security Bureau (ISB), a branch of the National Security Service, was removed from his position on Wednesday.

In a decree broadcast live on the state-run SSBC TV, President Kiir dismissed General Akol Koor Kuc as the Director General of the ISB, effective immediately. The decree did not specify the reasons for his removal.

In a separate order, the president appointed Lt Gen Akec Tong as the new ISB chief.

General Akol was first appointed in July 2011. His tenure has been marred by controversy, with critics describing him as someone with South Sudanese blood on his hands and accusing him of creating militia groups in the country.

Kiir subsequently reappointed Akol as the Governor of Warrap State.
