Washington, DC, July 22, 2018 (SSNA) — The United States on Sunday criticized South Sudanese rival leaders Salva Kiir and Dr. Riek Machar, saying the two leaders have failed to bring about a lasting peace in the country.
In a statement seen by the South Sudan News Agency (SSNA), the US says it welcomes the recently imposed UN Security Council arms embargo on South Sudan and threatened to sanction unnamed individuals it believes to engage in corruption.
“To alleviate the suffering of South Sudanese civilians, the United States welcomes the United Nations Security Council arms embargo, and we call on regional partners and United Nations member states to enforce fully this measure and to stem the flow of arms into South Sudan. The United States is prepared to sanction additional persons engaged in corrupt activity and those who threaten the peace, security, or stability of South Sudan,” the statement reads in part, adding, “South Sudan’s political leaders, including President Kiir and SPLM-IO leader Machar, have not demonstrated the leadership required to bring genuine peace and accountable governance to South Sudan.”
US imposed its own arms ban on South Sudan in February this year.
Washington warned that it will not provide financial assistance to the transitional government unless such a government shows commitment to peace.
“The United States will not be a guarantor of any agreement, and will not fund—or call for additional United Nations resources—to support the transitional government, in the absence of a sustained, demonstrated commitment to peace, inclusivity, financial accountability and good governance,” the text further read.
The US also condemns recent move by South Sudan national transitional parliament to extend Kiir’s term in office by 3 years.
