President Kiir Dissolves SPLM’s Structures, Cites Convention Delay

Juba, November 15, 2013 (SSNA) — South Sudanese president Salva Kiir Mayardiit has on Friday announced the dissolution of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) main organs, leaving only the secretariat division to function.

In his address, Kiir claims that his decision to dissolve SPLM’s structures was driven by the fact that the ruling party has failed to conduct its convention.

President Kiir has been using stalling tactics…the SPLM was expected to hold its convention in May, but, Kiir himself was silent on the issue because he fears that if the convention continues, then, the party may elect a different chairman instead of him.

President Kiir political rivals include Former VP Dr. Riek Machar, Pagan Amum, Rebecca Nyandeng de Mabior, Nhial Deng Nhial, Deng Alor Kuol, and many others.

Juba’s political crisis is not new, Kiir, who is also the chairman of the ruling SPLM, has in the past removed elected officials who disagreed with his leadership style.
