Juba, May 7, 2018 (SSNA) — A United Nations top official said recent call by South Sudan’s government to hold elections if peace revitalization talks failed is unreasonable, saying situation in the country is not good to conduct “fair and free elections.”

“The current political and economic situations in South Sudan are not conducive for free and fair elections,” UN’s Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Bintulu Keita, said in a statement.

She calls on South Sudan’s government to refrain from calling for elections and added that Juba should only focus on peace process.

South Sudan’s information minister Michael Makuey Lueth recently asserted that Juba is preparing to conduct elections if peace failed. He argues that elections should be held to legitimize the government.

Peace talks are scheduled to resume on May 17 in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.

Dear all, South Sudan matter is a bit complicated than what people think it is. UN point on disagreeing make a complete sense to me because for government to say will hold an election if forum bear no fruit is a free condition with those who negotiate with them. So the core is not a viable decision seeking a good outcome to make a peaceful solution to the country problem rather it is another means to keep them ahead if they see the other channels fail to support their agenda. Personal interest is what matter most here for the incumbent, otherwise if they are looking for alternative solution they should only follow where a good solution lie, in the best interest of the citizen. If the country security is not stable what is the other reason a leader would insist that he should be in lead? However, I also recognize individual opportunity to serve his/her time regardless how people see it. Yes, you people of South Sudan, do not cease to offer your prayers to the Lord, He is the One who is willing to turn this thing around in his timetable. I am saying this thing as someone who is not making an assumption of things that are occurring but have a firm understanding into much detail of it. By The Lord Mercy, May He heeds the cry of these innocents people.
