US honors Irish nun for education work in South Sudan

Juba, March 8, 2019 (SSNA) — The United States Department of State has awarded the annual International Women of Courage Awards to an Irish nun who has been educating South Sudanese girls since 2006, the State Department said in a statement.

Orla Treacy along with nine other women was honored on Thursday at the State Department.

Treacy who comes from Ireland was invited in 2006 by the Bishop of Rumbek to open a girls’ boarding school, according to the text.

The Nun said her work was faced with many challenges including trying to convince the local people to enroll their daughters in school.
