Juba, May 8, 2019 (SSNA) — The recently agreed extension of South Sudan pre-transitional period for six months to allow South Sudanese parties to the September 2018 peace deal enough time to execute security arrangements has been approved, the Ethiopian government announced today.

Ethiopia says on a Facebook post that council of East African ministers approved the 6-month extension which was requested last week by South Sudan’s government, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-In Opposition (SPLM-IO), and other political groups.

The parties met on May2-3 in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, after the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) realized that the May 12 dateline stipulated in the pact for South Sudanese rival factions to form a provisional government was approaching.

South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir called on SPLM-IO leader Dr. Riek Machar in April and asked him to join him in Juba to begin the formation of a unity government. Machar, refused, citing a lack of implementation of security arrangements.
