Kampala, December 19, 2018 (SSNA) — A Ugandan telecommunications engineer Andrew Ndawula who was working for MTN as a Switch Plant Engineer during the time of Dr. John Garang’s helicopter crash in July 2005 has reappeared in Kampala, sparking yet a new debate over whether the Engineer will be questioned by local and international authorities.
On July 30, 2005, Dr. Garang was in a helicopter flying to South Sudan’s new Kush site when his airplane crashed into a mountain and died instantly.
Andrew Ndawula was kidnapped by unnamed Ugandan security agency and detained in an undisclosed location. It widely believed that Andrew had heard private conversations minutes before and after Dr. Garang’s plane crashed.
The Uganda-based New Vision newspaper reported that Andrew was seen wedding his girlfriend who goes by the name Deborah Nankwanga Kawaala and that the Engineer later hosted a private reception at the Speke Resort and Conference Center.
Ugandan police confirmed that Garang’s file is still open and that they are interested in talking to Andrew more than 13 years after Garang’s death.
Late Garang was the founder of the historic Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A). His political doctrine is revered throughout South Sudan. His demise in 2005 stunned the then people of Southern Sudan. The late leader was also loved for his mastery of political negotiations and strategies.
