South Sudan agrees to more UN peacekeepers deployment

Juba, November 26, 2016 (SSNA) — The government of the Republic of South Sudan has agreed to more UN peacekeepers deployment to the war-torn young nation, government minister said.

Minister of Cabinet Affairs Martin Lomuro said South Sudan’s Cabinet unanimously agreed to the UNSC request “with no conditions.”

“I expect them arrive at any time. The challenge is now on the U.N. to implement and fulfill their promises,” Lomuro was quoted by the Associated Press as saying.

The move signals an end to a three-month dispute between Juba and the world body.

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) passed a resolution in August, increasing number of UN protection force. The move came after July fighting between South Sudanese rival forces.

The additional peacekeeping troops are mandated to protect civilians by the UN.
