White House backs ICC ruling, urges all parties to cooperate

July 13, 2010 (Washington) — The United States on Tuesday said it supports international efforts to bring those who are responsible for Darfur crimes to justice, just one day after the Sudanese president was charged by the ICC.

“The United States strongly supports international efforts to bring those responsible for genocide and war crimes in Darfur to justice and believes that there cannot be a lasting peace in Darfur without accountability”, said Mike Hammer, a White House National Security Council (NSC) spokesman.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued a second round of arrest warrant on Monday for Omar Hassan al-Bashir on three counts of genocide.

“We continue to call on the Government of Sudan and all other parties to the conflict to cooperate fully with the International Criminal Court”, Hammer added.

Omar Hassan al-Bashir, who is the first sitting president to be indicted by the Hague-based court, has consistently denies all the charges and refused to cooperate.

At least 300, 000 people lost their lives and 2.7 million displaced, according to United Nations estimate.
