Nuer Community in Ethiopia to hold an election this month

Addis Ababa, October 10, 2014 (SSNA) — Speaking to Mekonen Teferi on Thursday, 09 October 2014, the Acting Chairperson of [for] Nuer Community in Ethiopia, Nhial Wal Dap, disclosed to the reporters that the general election is due to be held on Saturday, 25 October 2014.

South Sudan torn apart by man-made crisis in December 2013 and more than 188,000 Nuer are believed to be refugees in Western part of Gambella Region, Ethiopia.

In a separate interview, the Electoral Board Technical Assistant said that the event will be highly supervised and tight security will be put in place for safety of the voters.

Garwech Kewer Kong who is also a sound Engineer and Electoral Board Technical Assistant added that some helpful machines would be use during the event for security and safety while equipments such as video camera and projector will also be used for candidates’ presentation an hour before voting kick-off. 

Kewer urged the candidates to prepare for hard talk during the presentation and use their vision to unite Nuer around the World.

The Acting Chairperson Mr. Nhial Wal Dap added that the key positions to be elected are:

  • Chairperson
  • Deputy Chairperson
  • Secretary and
  • Finance

Chairperson will nominate the rest of the positions such as Information and others.

Kewer said that the Chairmanship is highly contested by several competent candidates, which he believes their numbers may raise up to three candidates. 

In another development, the Spoke person for Mekane Yesus Seminary Nuer Students Union and Fellowship (MYSNSUF), Mr. Kang Nhial Lual added that their term will expire down on Sunday, 26 October, 2014 and hold an election as well.

[South Sudan] warring parties have been negotiating the truce under IGAD in Ethiopia while some reports disclosed that the IGAD adjourned the deal until October 16 (next week).
