New York/Juba, November 17, 2016 (SSNA) — The United States’ Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power said her country is ready for an arms embargo and other sanctions on the war-torn South Sudan.
The American top UN diplomat, in what appears to be shift in Obama’s administration foreign policy, disclosed at the United Nation Security Council meeting today that the United States now supports sanctions and that it is ready to introduce a resolution for an arms embargo and targeted sanctions.
The move comes as humanitarian agencies sound an alarm of looming genocide and claims of countless arms going to South Sudan. The announcement also came just one day after UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon warned of “real risk of mass atrocities.”
The punitive measures, if approved, would prevent import of weapons to the young nation and impose travel bans on unnamed individuals and freeze their assets.
“As we sit here, more arms are flowing into this country,” Power told the Security Council.
Russia claims sanctions would not solve anything and that they could simply escalate the already raging civil war.
The U.S. has been objecting to imposition of an arms embargo and has been criticized by some European nations for not supporting it.
It is not clear when the US will introduce its proposal. However, UN diplomatic sources said Washington fed up with South Sudanese warring factions and that the introduction of the proposal would not take long.
