Pretoria/Juba, December 14, 2016 (SSNA) — South African government has denied media reports of alleged house arrest of former South Sudanese vice president and rebel leader Dr. Riek Machar.

In a statement issued today, South Africa says it is concerned with some media reports which claimed the government of South Africa has placed Dr. Machar under house arrest.

“Indeed, Dr Riek Machar is still in South Africa and the South African Government is taking care of him, given his profile,” the statement reads in part.

“South Africa wishes to reiterate her commitment to continue to work with the Government and the people of South Sudan in search of peace, stability and development. South Africa does this through her participation in the IGAD Plus mechanism, as well as the inter-party political dialogue which is facilitated by Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa and the Chama Cha Mapinduzi of the United Republic of Tanzania,” the statement further explained.

Unsubstantiated reports claimed Machar is under house arrest in South Africa and that his movement and communications are being restricted and monitored. Some reports also alleged that he was arrested because South African government doesn’t want him to cause troubles in the war-torn South Sudan.

A senior rebel official calls the reports “groundless,” adding “those who fear Machar should not waste their time fabricating self-serving news.”

The armed opposition leader fled Juba in July when government troops tried to assassinate him.

The allegation, made by Juba regime, claiming that H.E Dr. Riek Machar is under House arrest, would not help them.Dr. Machar is free there in South Africa and will come home any time when he wanted. Juba was doing this purposely for the Country to move toward confusion as they have already fail the people of South Sudan.

  • Passport itself is not easy for him to travel anywhere. He has to apply for political Asylum in South Africa ,but it will take many years for him. Methinks

  • H.E President Jacob Zuma I respect your stance on this very issues I don’t see the reason why Dr.Machar will be detained the rogue regime in Juba plus Obama claim their madness that they will banned him in politic it’s just a mere propaganda because Dr. Machar have his own Military and have his own government!

  • I think the interpretation and translation of our current media communication never put foot on the real fact and truths of any matter being circulated by those media houses around the globe and the well being of Dr Machar in the region, in fact, my fear in any news concerning the well being of Dr Machar and his freedom in the region as whole will never depend on brought daylights lies, because Dr Machar is a free man that is fighting for real democracy and freedom of every South Sudanese regardless of your tribes, religion and color of your skin. so in actual fact, we are proud of Dr machar and we will eventually celebrate the freedom of every South Sudanese tribes from the devil regime of Salva Kiir, Malong Awan and Taban Deng Gai, mark my word. to conclude, South Sudan will be very free from those above mention individuals no matter how long it take, so i urged all South Sudanese tribes to take courage in demanding their freedom from Salva Kiir ,Malong awan and Taban Deng Gai using any mean possible.

    • James Tot,
Salva Kiir and the rest you mentioned will never be removed by force. If they could, only if large part of Dinka is mobilzed, particularly thru peace and not armed violents. Majority Dinka will not join or support rebels.
For those drumming to force their way and install Riek Machar as president, I think Kiir has more support, people and power to remain where he’s now for rest of his life.
Riek supporters especially those calling for more war are missing something. Conflict started 3 years go and Riek is not today better off than when he started.
Who will then to make him president- AU, IGAD, UN, UNITED STATES?
Personally, I’don’t want see not only those but all SPLM leaders, other murderers, thieves whose hands allover have blood, coruption, name it to be removed and judged.
But peace, only peace as many people have called for is only way to achieve unity than get to thugs as one South Sudanese.
Or we can continue same path and results will continue to be same: innocent South Sudanese absorbing uncalled sufferings while culprits living luxurious.

  • I am convinced that South Africa is holding Dr. Riek Machar under house arrest. Forget syntax. But I also believe that this is a political mistake by the CM. Zuma regime in South Africa. There is one thing the rest of the world should know about South Sudan: the military and political struggle is based on tribe……just like in many other African countries like Kenya, Rwanda, Nigeria, Ethiopia, DRC Congo, etc. I could of course be wong but I belive one cannot solve the political crisis by excluding Dr. Machar or Salva Kiir from the political equation. It now looks like IGAD, AU and the international community has decided that peace in South Sudan can be achieved in SS by backing Kiir (Dinka) and that is what is wrong! For people who don’t know, this is one country which has been fighting imperialism long before Jesus Christ was born? You want genuine peace here, then you need to go back to that peace negotiation…..however boring…..however laborious it is, otherwise SS will go back to war which they have been involved in since 10 BC.
