Juba/Pagak, January 3, 2017 (SSNA) — The Sudan People’s Liberation Army-In Opposition (SPLA-IO) has accused government forces of fresh attacks in Eastern Equatoria state, the spokesman for the armed opposition said.

In a statement obtained by the South Sudan News Agency (SSNA), Colonel William Gatjiath Deng, the official spokesperson for the SPLA-IO, said Juba-backed troops launched surprised attacks on rebel containment sites along a Torit-Maguiy road in an area called Lolere.

“It was in the afternoon when the SPLA-IG launched an attack on the SPLA-IO at the containment base along Torit, Maguiy road…,” Col. Deng said.

The SPLA-IO spokesman states rebel forces under the command of General Fatric Ohiti successfully repulsed the engaging force and chased them out of Torit, adding that the armed opposition killed at least 20 government soldiers, captured in good condition 36 AK-47s, 4 PKM-Machine guns, 2 RPG-7, and destroyed 1 texture fixed with 12.7

In the announcement, Deng South Sudan’s government is carrying out a “genocidal policy” against citizens of Equatoria region. He added that people are disappearing every day in the Greater Equatoria region and Kiir’s government is systematically killing innocent civilians, raping women and young girls, and burning villages.

The SPLA-IO also says government recent attacks against its troops is an attempt by Kiir to force the armed opposition out of Equatoria region.

Eastern Equatoria state is also known as Imatong State under Kiir’s 28 states expansion plan, has recently witnessed am increase in widespread crackdown on civilians under the pretext that they are rebels or rebel supporters.

  • One thing for sure is, his Excellency President and his national forces are not committing a genocide. The president is committed to peace. The rebels should go to their allocated camps and then join the national dialogue for which the President is relentlessly campaigning to achieve stability. The word genocide is now a cliché.

    • Bala I’m not sure where you reside but unfortunately you are regrettably misinformed. I’m a US Envoy with the UN and just returned from South Sudan 4 days ago. I witnessed ethnic cleansing and atrocities that no one should ever see by the Dinka Rebels. So even though they call for peace talks which is a complete oxymoron at the same time just yesterday January 3, 2017 Kiir’s government is systematically killing innocent civilians, raping women and young girls, and burning villages. So unless it was just rebels out for some fun then you need to do your research or go there and see it for yourself if you live through it. I’m just glad to be alive! One other thing if Genocide has become a cliche in your own words then the 50.000 that have been butchered so far since this started yet again I guess are just collateral damage. Cannon fodder.

  • Comment *People are blinded by money of kiir and his colleagues in juba. they don’t see the genocide which has been taking place and they are not ashamed when the population of South Sudan runs to neighbouring Nations for their lives. Who is going to rescue if not them?????

  • The president of South sudan kirr has failed the people of South sudan. Therefore he should resign or quickly call Dr riak machar back to the table or else the war will not end. He has to disown taban Deng is the enemy of eguatorian. The agender of taban Deng is to eleminate the existence of eguatorian in power. If nothing is done l call all eguatorian to take control or eguatorian. Mr president of the jenge council if you want not to embarrace the dinkas, you must act quickly by recalling the dr riak machar and his vice henary Odwar the son of all eguatorian back for peace in the country. Taban who defected to you, salver kiir must not represent the splm-io. he is part of the government.

  • Hey Bala,
Your lies are only true to your Jaang mind. Your dinka president has committed a crime that is only redeemable if he can stepdown or he is killed or dead. Deceive yourself about bogus dialague. What you Jaang has done in 2013 required revenge. To reconcile in every society, required A B C & D process. You cannot start frorm B and expect a real solution. There must be accountable for over 20,000 nuer dead and more than 50, 000 South Sudanese dead for a real peace to come back. All the dinka yaaping here and there, is only for dinka consumption to make yourselves relevance. The train of bloodshed in our land is on the roll. Only you Jaang can stop it by coming to your sense to why we fought Jallaba in the first place. Your luck right now in Juba and in Baregezal is IO weak leadership. Let Gatmachar stay away and you will beg for him.

  • Agree totally. Since June 2016 for any bit of violence IO scream out genocide. What about their attacks on other peacful ethnic groups. Maybe if they joined in discussions and the “leadership” spoke of peace then things would improve. These constant outbursts are doing nothing for stability in the country and for foreign investment.

  • kiir and his JCE know it well well that the juba regime can’t stay in power anymore if total peace n freedom are prevailed, today if a free n fair election is to b held in south Sudan, the can’t make even 10.0% of the total vote from the Greater Equatoria region, so his attack on civilians is to reduce the number of voters from equatoria

  • Comment *a concerned president must be an informed president and a learnt one i witnessed atrocities committed by dinka soldiers in yei along yei lasu road few kilometres away from lutaya market where civilians coming from the market were arrested including women taken to a near by house, a
sked few questions, and finally they were stripped naked they started shooting at them finally the house was set a blase. what are the south Sudanese hiding? it is clear that any one who is not a dinka by tribe is an enemy, that’s why, when group of equatorians having meeting to mobilise funds to run a school is looked at as something against the Dinka supremacy .

Most of the people leaving comments here are not within the country.Up to where shall we go if we continue saying negative things about our leaders. What shall we gain from blaming one another tribes. What do we mean these is an equartorian, dinka or nuer ,no one was born with tribe we found them on earth because our heavenly father belongs to non of the tribes.why trying to win some tribes to support you in what you are doing because your people thinks it is the best thing.it makes you look illiterate. South Sudanese we have suffered a lot let’s choose a violence free path as Nelson mandala .I know most of us grew in violence and a revengeful societies but we can still adopt to a violence free societies. Think about your future and plan for it rather than blaming and following someone who doesn’t know you.you die he continues to eat good food, his children in good schools or a good peaceful place as your own becomes orphans and they will curse you for bring them to this world . Those of you who are supporting violence may you not reach the end of this month in Jesus name.
