Juba, October 5, 2018 (SSNA) — South Sudan’s President, Salva Kiir Mayardit, will never accept a peace that barred him from ruling through decrees, a senior government official who agreed to talk on condition of anonymity told the South Sudan News Agency (SSNA) Friday evening.

The official explained that Kiir is more than willing to give government positions and that those who think the President will allow democratic reforms to take place are “dreaming.”

“It is a known fact here in Juba. All senior government officials know it. Kiir will never allow rebels or other opposition parties to amend the constitution,” he asserted. He added, “the constitution should have been amended before the pre-transitional period begins and that people who believe the constitution will change four months after the transitional period begin are dreaming.”

The source harshly criticized the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-In Opposition (SPLM-IO) and other opposition parties for what he described as “failure to identify the real problem.”

“Let me tell you something. I work for the government. If Kiir knows I am the one who talks to you now, I bet you would know what would happen to me,” the official jokingly told the South Sudan News Agency.

“The SPLM-IO and other political groups are not doing enough. This is a failure to identify the real problem,” he added.

The official also claimed during the interview that the current First Vice President Taban Deng Gai is closely working with Kiir on a host of different issues. The source declined to elaborate further when asked to explain what exactly Kiir and Taban are working on. He, however, disclosed that Kiir and his inner circle do not want a court to prosecute people who have committed war crimes and crimes against humanity.
