Khartoum, April 16, 2019 (SSNA) — The leaders of the South Sudan United Movement (SSUM) General Peter Gatdet Yak also known as Jundi Iraq has died in Sudanese capital Khartoum on Monday, a relative of the late General who asked for anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media told the South Sudan News Agency (SSNA).

The relative explained that Peter Gatdet died in a mysterious circumstance, saying “a questionable heart attack” was to be blamed for his death. The source disclosed that relatives of the late General are working out options whether a full autopsy should be performed on Peter Gatdet.

Peter Gatdet, who is viewed by some people as a powerful and controversial figure, was a General in the South Sudanese national army before the civil war broke out in December 2013. He then joined the Sudan People’s Liberation Army-In Opposition (SPLA-IO) lead by Dr. Riek Machar.

Peter along with a few rebel figures left the armed opposition in August 2015, accusing Machar of controlling everything in the movement. Machar denied the allegations.

The late General hails from Mayom County of former Unity State.
