New York/Juba, May 30, 2023 (SSNA) — The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has extended an arms embargo and other targeted sanctions on South Sudan for one year, a statement by the Council shows.

The 15-member council also extended the mandate of the UN Panel of Experts for another year.

The vote in favor of extension comes on Tuesday as South Sudan’s government lobbies Russia, China, and African countries to lift the sanctions.

South Sudan has been accused of buying weapons and other military hardware in violation of the UNSC sanction guidelines.
