South Sudan’s President Accuses his Political Rivals of ‘Attempted Coup’; Vows ‘Justice Will Prevail’

Juba, December 16, 2013 (SSNA) — South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardiit has accused his political rivals of orchestrating of what he termed as “a failed coup”.

On the state run SSTV, the visibly angry president assures the citizens that his government took full control of the security situation in the capital, Juba. He said that the fight has created fear among citizens, adding justice will prevail.

Kiir, in his military uniforms, declared that the fight happened when an unidentified person near or at around Nakura Cultural Center released gunshots; asserting that forced allied to the former Vice President Dr. Machar were behind the fighting.

There is a general fear among Juba’s residents that a similar fight might occur again.

With him at the new conference were his VP James Wani and Foreign Minister Dr. Barnaba Marial Bejamin, among others.

The president further swears that his government will not allows the repeat of 1991—a reference to the 1991 split of the SPLM/A.
