Government troops attack rebel position in Western Equatoria State

Juba, January 3, 2016 (SSNA) — A rebel group led by former information minister of Western Equatoria State said government forces have attacked its outpost in Yambio, Western Equatoria State.

Charles Barnaba Kisanga, the chairman of South Sudan People’s Patriotic Front (SSPPF/Arrow Boys), has condemned the government, saying Juba-backed troops launched surprised attack on one of their positions using heavy machine guns and mortars. The SSPPF/Arrow Boys) leader added that the fighting broke out between elements of Arrow boys and SPLA commando and that the clash caused civilians to flee towards Congo and Uganda.

Kisanga declares that the fighting is not encouraged by the SSPPF/Arrow Boys leadership and calls on IGAD, SPLM-IO, Troika, and JMEC "to work toward realization of ceasefire" in Western Equatoria.

The South Sudan News Agency (SSNA) understands that the PPF/Arrow Boys affiliates itself with the armed opposition led by Former South Sudanese Vice President Dr. Riek Machar.
