Civilians flee as violence intensifies in Equatoria region

Kampala/Juba, February 15, 2017 (SSNA) — Heavy fighting between South Sudan warring factions intensified in and around Kajo-Keji county of Central Equatoria, resulting in massive displacement of civilians, humanitarian personnel told the South Sudan News Agency (SSNA) in Kampala on Wednesday.

The aid workers also said the number of South Sudanese fleeing the violence in Yei and Kajo-Keji has increased dramatically, saying thousands of refugees arrive in Uganda every day.

New arrivals who identified themselves simply as “citizens of Kajo-Keji County” said government forces are targeting anyone fleeing the violence and that they blocked any main road leading to northern Uganda, adding “government forces round up young people days and nights and take them to the forest or unknown location.”

“My younger brother was taken on February 5 and never returned,” a young woman who appeared to be in her early twenties told the South Sudan News Agency in Ugandan Moyo district.

South Sudanese refugees in Moyo also told the SSNA that a huge number of South Sudanese government soldiers are carrying out summary executions, torture, kidnapping, and raping women and girls in and around Kajo-Keji County.

The UN has recently reported escalation of violence in Yei and Kajo Keji towns and sent peacekeepers to Kajo-Keji County last week.

  • Any gvt that’s to go for good has to do all such atrocities to civilians, the current Dinka gvt in south Sudan now sees no future of peacefully staying in power anymore weather militarily or democratically, they are paving way for the peoples leader Dr Riak Machar to be more n more popular, today Machar has over 60% of south Sudan’s support with nearly 97% of all equatorians behind him, time will tell in God’s name!!

  • Comment * Kiir’s brutal regime should be held accountable to all its catastrophic actions in South Sudan. Sooner than later justice will visit you CDE Kiir because the people of SS needs peace. Remember, SS is for all South Sudanese not only the Dinkas. So, l as a fellow African urges Kiir’s regime to listen to the voice of reason and try to find peace with warring parties particularly his long time foe, CDE Machar. On the same note its crystal clear that peace cannot be achieved militarily but through inclusive dialogue neither with friends nor same tribe but with all aggrieved South Sudanese. I urge you to seek guidance from Zimbabwe’s veteran leader, CDE R. G Mugabe, how they did it during the Ndebele Gukurahundi massacre and 1987 peace accord with Dr Nkomo. Justice, Peace and Reconciliation is of paramount for nation building- you cannot achieve economic growth when you are at war, never. Therefore, with prudence, CDE Kiir, as South Sudanese leader try to do everything in your disposal to fend-off peace critics and try to renegotiate with your long time enemy, CDE Machar, for the sake of your people who are suffering everyday. In retrospect, once be with Machar together in the bushes under the stewardship of Dr John Garang fighting to emancipate the same South Sudanese whom you are butchering today, just imagine. May everlasting peace tie CDE Kiir and Dr Machar so that they lead their nation in harmony, peace and tranquility.

    Yours,
    Concerned Zimbabwean.

  • Actually war can ‘t be a solution and no one likes it but the problem causing the ongoing fighting in S. Sudan today is people them selves, why do you cry on president Salva Kiir? He is a man of peace, even Dinkas now are not thinking of war against other tribes, but they will know later on and when they awake, there will be no room to any triblists (specially so called Equatorians) then they ‘ll ripe what they ‘ve planted.
