South Sudan’s peace in limbo as Kiir refuses to release political detainees

Khartoum, September 22, 2018 (SSNA) — South Sudanese President Salva Kiir has refused to released Prisoners of War (POWs) and political detainees as stipulated in past and current ceasefire deals, a senior Sudanese official in the ministry of foreign affairs told the South Sudan News Agency (SSNA) in Khartoum.

The official who declined to be named in the report because he was not authorized to talk to the media explained that the leader of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-In Opposition (SPLM-IO) Dr. Riek Machar asked Kiir during a peace celebration event in Khartoum to release political detainees and POWs before peace implementation process begin, but Kiir refused. The official disclosed that Machar also asked Kiir to lift the state of emergency and that Kiir also rejected Machar’s request.

“Today Machar asked Kiir to release POWs and political detainees, but Kiir rejected the request. We don’t why he keeps refusing to release people while the peace deal calls for both leaders to release Prisoners of War and political detainees,” the official said.

The Sudanese official further added that “nobody is certain about this peace agreement.”

This is not the first time Kiir refused to released POWs and political detainees. The South Sudan News Agency understands that the SPLM-IO leader Machar has in the past released political detainees and Prisoners of War as stipulated in those pacts.

Many South Sudanese Analysts questioned the viability of the recently signed Khartoum peace agreement, citing expansion of government, prisoners release, the issue of 32 states, failure to amend the current constitution, security arrangements, among others.

  • Kuir, Great opinions you”ve put forth but in reality, dictatorship, as you aptly stated, is the curse in the new nation. Confining ourselves in Africa only, the resolution to the termination of such regimes is by complete removal of these dictators. President killer Kiir clearly epitomizes this political aberration and the only solution is the elimination and overthrow of his abysmal regime. All nationalities (tribes) must come together and terminate this shameful political aberration in our nation. All South Sudanese peoples equally contributed and suffered in the long struggle for independence and freedom” since 1955. Kiir and his cronies must go out the same way of Mobutu”s, Siad Barre”s, Mengistu, Nimeri, Bokassa, Ghadafi, Obote, Idi Amin etcetc. Then, and only then, peace, progress and unity of the nation will be realized.
