New York, February 5, 2019 (SSNA) — South Sudanese main rebel leader Dr. Riek Machar is planning to return to Juba and resume his former role as the country First Vice President, the head of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) David Shearer told reporters at the UN headquarters in New York today.

The announcement comes as the implementation of September 2018 agreement, which is already behind more than four months, is at its early stage.

“He told me that he is committed to coming back still at the end of May,” Shearer said, adding, “There are some tricky issues still to be resolved.”

The UNMISS head says the Khartoum’s peace agreement offers some hope for lasting peace in the young nation.

“But it’s an agreement that is there that we feel offers the best chance in a long while for moving South Sudan in the right direction,” he explains.

The deal stipulates that a transitional government will run the war-wracked young nation for three years and that election will be conducted thereafter.
