Washington, DC/Juba, April 19, 2019 (SSNA) — The United States has added South Sudan to a new kidnapping list and asks its citizens not to travel to the war-wracked young nation, an updated version of US State Department travel advisory seen by the South Sudan News Agency (SSNA) shows.
The announcement comes days after an American citizen Kimberly Sue Endicott was kidnapped in Ugandan Queen Elizabeth National Park.
The new advisory was updated on April 9, listing South Sudan under what it described as “Level 4: Do Not Travel.” The State Department explicitly says, “Do not travel to South Sudan due to crime, kidnapping, and armed conflict.”
The letter “K,” which stands for Kidnapping has been added as an indicator of the risk of being kidnap or hostage-taking, according to the State Department.
The US has added the kidnapping indicator to South Sudan along with other 34 countries.
Early this month, the United States declared South Sudan as a threat to its national security and extended the April 2014 Executive Order 13664 beyond 2019.
The U.S. has been consistently warning Americans not to travel to South Sudan. South Sudan’s government has in the past accused the United States of working against peace.
